So Eurovision 2020 is this week… or it should have been thanks to the Coronavirus. Here in Australia, to compensate for the lost event, we’re having a Eurovision week, where SBS broadcasts the last grand finals Australia was to countdown to Europe Shine a Light.
But I still wished Eurovision 2020 happened as these are the acts I was looking forward to see.
1. Don’t Break Me – Montaigne (Australia)
Despite this year’s Australia’s Decides being a bit weak this year, this song felt the most powerful. This song hits home to me due to personal reasons and the way it’s performed is oddly unique. Luckily, Montaigne will be performing the song live on stage in ‘Eurovision: The Big Night In’.
But the reason why I was looking forward to this act is because Australia steps the performance up-a-notch during the actual event compared to the national selection. Like look a Zero Gravity – in the national selection, Kate was just standing still. In the actual event, she’s flying.
2. Think about Things – Daði og Gagnamagnið (Iceland)
Before Daði became a massive meme this year, his song was one of the fan favourites. It was quirky and he was robbed in 2017 in Songvakeppnin. I was really looking forward to see him live (despite me rooting for Iva). Sadly that was taken away from him and it’s unclear whether he’s returning in 2021 as he said he doesn’t want to compete for the national selection again.
Also… Daði is touring in Europe so I beg… PLEASE TOUR IN AUSTRALIA!!!
3. On Fire – The Roop (Lithuania)
THIS ACT RIVALLED ICELAND IN TERMS OF DANCING!!!
Same reasons, the song is catchy, the dancing is just bizarre, and it was also a fan favourite. Also… I can’t believe he flossed in the live performance. What I was looking forward to is the camerawork that will be shown during the TV broadcast as the official music video played with mirrors and reflections and the national performance played with cameras and lights. Will it be the same or different? I guess we’ll never know.
4. Cleopatra – Efendi (Azerbaijan)
I really was looking forward to see how this song will play out on stage. It reminds me of ‘Dark Horse’ by Katy Perry but punchier. And it’s hard for me to picture the staging or the costume as in the music video, SO MUCH IS GOING ON (Esp the deep vocal part before the chorus hits).
I wish a video of the stage performance exists cuz I’d like to see it. Picturing how this song is pulled off on stage is hurting my head.
5. Uno – Little Big (Russia)
IT’S RUSSIAN AQUA!!! Plus I love the costumes and simple staging in the music video that I wonder if it will be the same or will be there some minor changes.
6. Chains on You – Athena Manoukaian (Armenia)
I’m getting strong Ariana Grande vibes with her vocals and the music video reminds me of Look what you made me do by Taylor Swift. I can get a small picture on what the live performance is like (especially since they released the national performance) but the music video slaps.
7. Solovey – Go_A (Ukraine)
Glad to see a Ukranian act with no political undertones or was involved with any politcial drama. The amount of times that this song was played. on repeat surprised me as it was catchy and it’s tied within their culture as it’s based of a folktale. Shame that we’ll never get to see this act on the big stage. But hey, the national performance seems nice.
8. My Last Breath – James Newman (United Kingdom)
It seems like the UK is finally taking Eurovision seriously this song. This song stuck with me for a while and I just wonder how this song would look like on stage. Will it be simple or will it be like Iceland’s 2020 staging with a snowy forest background.
Also, damn, this guy wrote songs for some of my favourite artists. Based on this documentary in the BBC, he wrote for Little Mix.
9. Alive – Vincent Bueno (Austria)
FILIPINO PRIDE!!! And sadly was taken away. I heard he’s going back in 2021 so that’s good. But dear God, this song is catchy and it’s giving me some Bruno Mars/Benjamin Ingrosso vibes.
10. Take me as I am – Tornike Kipiani (Georgia)
What’s with Georgia sending grungy/angsty songs lately? The fact this song is just him singing in the music studio and car, I just wonder how he will be like on stage. His vocals are powerful and I just can imagine Tornike just belting out on stage.
Also, if this song GETS ROBBED in Eurovisoon 2020 (if it did happen), I will riot.
And these are my top 10 acts that I was looking forward to see on stage. I’m glad that some of the artists were given the chance to return next year so that’s nice. What acts were you looking forward to see in Eurovision?
