Welcome back to another ‘Song of the month’, a series where I talk about that one song that got stuck in my head during the month’s duration.
This month: Ways to be Wicked from Disney’s Descendants 2 (2017)
How did I hear about this song
So… one video that YouTube recommended to me was a video talking about ‘Ever After High’. In that video, it discussed how Disney’s Descendants “copied” the show hence why it stopped making episodes. From there, I watched the trailers for the 3 Disney movies and the 2nd movie had ‘Ways to be wicked‘ in the background.
Thoughts on Ways to be wicked
The song is catchy.
After watching the first movie, I found out that Kenny Ortega had a huge involvement in the film’s production. I recognize him as he did the High School Musical trilogy. And I heard this is the first song played in the 2nd movies… so, of course, this song would be catchy and upbeat.
It’s ‘What Time Is It‘ but for fairytale villains.

I stopped believing in ‘fairytales’ and ‘happily ever afters’ in my final year of university and that grew overtime. The moment it was truly crushed was around August and everything you learn about ‘true love‘ and ‘a knight in shining armour‘ — GONE. Why? Because I realize that storyline wasn’t for me. In my opinion, I like the original story of ‘the little mermaid’ where the mermaid turns to seafoam cuz she gave up everything just for the prince but failed and couldn’t kill herself to save her life (yes, that is the real story).
For me, in that first verse, it talks about changing how to obtain that happy ever after. Breaking the status quo and proving that you don’t need to follow the ‘traditional to get it’.
Why is it Song of the Month?
I like it. It’s too catchy.
This song feels like a power anthem for kids (or anyone) if they want to break the tradition of ‘living their story’. Like you don’t have to follow what’s in the book and do things your own way.
Music-wise, it’s upbeat, it’s danceable, it’s a good song to start off the 2nd movie and it somewhat follows the ‘Disney Musical Trilogy’ format where they have to have a strong start to the film.
And this is why Ways to be wicked is my song of the month.
