Why there needs to be more pink in video games

[tds_note]This started out as a joke over in the Discord Critters server. Due to what happened, I now wish to share what I said to the members of the group[/tds_note]

I’ve been playing video games since I was around 4-5 years old. The first game I’ve ever owned was Pokemon Blue for the Gameboy Color. It was a hand-me-down from my cousin and since then, I’ve been a casual Pokemon fan, buying the latest installments and is looking forward to Pokemon Sword and Shield. But I play more than just a game where I catch cute pocket monsters. I eventually went to MMORPG’s such as Club Penguin, Minecraft, and Runescape.

One thing I’ve noticed when playing video games is that – there is a lack of the color “pink” in the game. And when there is, the way is presented is somewhat… okay but you’d sometimes wish for more.

[tds_warning]PS: Reminder – this blog post started out as a joke. Pls don’t take it too seriously[/tds_warning]

1 – The color sets us apart from the sea of blue and black

A pink toque in a sea of blue

It’s good to stand out from the crowd. It’s not like wearing a different colour will give you a superpower. You can create a pink outfit in Runescape during the character creation and it won’t change your stats or anything at all.

Yeah… it might be bad in regards to hiding but in Fortnite, players don’t want to wear the chamo/default skins. They want the flashy ones!

2 – We need to attract female-inclined players w/o making it too obvious

Unicorn is great… but that’s too easy… and cliche (sorry Lance).

If we want to attract female gamers, you need to do it in a way without making it too obvious. Pink/pastel colours are a basic start. But also, female lead characters/heroes.

3 – Pink was more like fuschia in the original Club Penguin

[tds_note]This part of the argument will only stick for the upcoming game “Box Critters” by Lance Priebe (the creator of Club Penguin)[/tds_note]

Guys… there is a reason why I didn’t name my penguin “Pinkjea”. IT WASN’T PINK.

See the difference? I’d also like to point out that in Club Penguin that there were like 2 different shades of blue and 3 different shades of green… ALL WITH THEIR OWN NAMES!!!

4 – Pink in video games = Damsel in distress

Have you seen Princess Peach? SHE’S THE LITERAL DEFINITION OF DAMSEL IN DISTRESS.

We need to change the way we see the colour that so that Pink = Strong-willed characters. Even in Megaman Axess (an anime I used to watch) – Meiru and Roll were just a side character and failed to synchronize with their owner when the protagonist NEEDED IT THE MOST!!!

5 – Its always grey, and brown, and cool colors.

Even in Powerpuff girls… it was ONLY IN THE ANIME VERSION that they went with Pink.

Yes – the original blossom was red… NOT PINK.

All female heroes wore dark coloured outfits and we rarely see strong female protagonist in Pink. This also goes in video games. Not a lot of strong female characters in Pink.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that… we need to change the way we see how we view the colour pink. It’s more than just something cute, it’s an interesting colour that’s rarely seen in video games unless you’re the FRICKING DAMSEL IN DISTRESS!!!

But it’s not just the colour pink – even simple pastel colours get less recognition in video games unless it’s for aesthetic or minimalistic reasons.

Pink, it’s shade of colours, and anything matching to it (pastel, light colours, etc) needs more recognition in video games. They need to show that we’re not just sidekicks but can also be heroes… but hey, that’s just my opinion.
