All 41 songs (or 42 if you count Ukraine) have been released and we only have 53 days (as I’m writing this) till the first semi-finals. If 2018 was ballad heavy, 2019 is sorta a mix of 2017 and 2018. There are still A LOT of ballads but there are some that tries to steer away from that that somewhat reminds me of the setlist from 2 years ago.
I’ve listened to most of the songs (cuz some songs didn’t make it to Spotify or it wasn’t my taste after first impressions) and I came with my top 10 list of my favourite entries.
Note, this might change overtime – especially when the contest begins or when I get the official soundtrack.
My top 10 songs
10. Roi – Bilal Hassani (France)
Roi is the song sung by Bilal Hassani and i feel like this song is somewhat about self-confidence and that you shouldn’t let people knock you down. It’s a beautiful song and every emotional in a sense. I saw the live performance and I somewhat sense a very sparkly act.
It’s a good song… however it felt a bit bland in a sense. Not in a bad way, it matches the mood of the song but it’s not the type of song I’d play in repeat.
9. La Venda – Miki (Spain)
La Venda is a very… VERY cheerful song. It’s very upbeat and it somewhat screams “Spain” in a sense. It’s something you could play in a party or if you want to have a good time.
I commented when the National Selection video came out in the official Eurovision channel and OHH BOY… THE DEBATE. I still stand by the point that it doesnt sound like cringe.
8. Replay – Tamta (Cyprus)
I like this song due to the amount of hype by Wiwibloggs has placed for this entry. It’s ok, I like it, would ‘replay‘ it when I can. Only problem… it just sounds like Fuego. Someone even made a “mashup” and it’s almost the same!!!
I know Fuego got 2nd place and was neck and neck with Netta but… submitting the same song??? Okay.
7. Ktheju tokës – Jonida Maliqu (Albania)
One of the first songs I’ve heard. This song is very powerful and it somewhat reminds me of 1944 by Jamala (except without the shady political sub-context).
6. She got me – Luka Hänni (Switzerland)
She got me is just an upbeat song that I enjoy. Just a really good song you’d hear in the club. I guess I just like this song because I just enjoyed it.
5. Say na na na – Serhat (San Marino)
I blame the Tumblr community for this.
In the Tumblr group chat I’m in, they REALLY LIKE Serhat… or anything from San Marino. I don’t know why exactly but Serhat’s previous song “I didn’t know” is not that bad in my opinion.
But Say na na na is really really catchy. I enjoy it. Would play in repeat.
4. Look away – Darude ft. Sebastian Rejman (Finland)
Just like Serhat, I like this song due to the MEME COMMUNITY.
God damn… Sandstorm plays in the background.
To be completely honest, Superman was better but Look Away… it’s alright. I feel like this song addresses the issues of our society in a lowkey way and how we shouldn’t ignore them.
3. Spirit in the sky – Keiino (Norway)
I like Spirit in the sky for a few reasons.
- Alexander Rybak’s violin cover
- The Reddit Hype for it
This song just reminds me of Fairytale. It’s a pop song but has some elements of their country’s culture. I played this song constantly since it was announced that it eventually reached my Top 25 most played songs playlist on my iTunes library.
2. Scream – Sergey Lazarev (Russia)
So much hype was built up for Sergey. How can he top is previous performance and ranking in 2016? Scream is very powerful. I love it. I love the medieval aspect to it
1. Hatrið mun sigra – Hatari (Iceland)
Yes, lots of conflicts in regards to this song… HOWEVER, I like it. It’s an anti-Eurovision song that’s unapologetic and doesn’t sugarcoat reality. Think Occidentali’s Karma but darker due to the lyrics used. It’s a giant mirror on our society.
And sex appeal. So much sex appeal.
Want to know why Russia was ranked down to 2nd place and put Netherlands to first in the betting odds… cuz Hatari stole Sergey’s sex appeal.
Honourable mentions
Of course, there were other songs that I liked but didn’t make it to my top 10 list. Here is a lightning round on those entries that I’ve also enjoy.
- 22 – Sarah McTernan (Ireland) – It’s a teen bop song (at least for me) that I like and would also play in repeat.
- Heaven – D-Mol (Montenegro) – Just enjoyed it when it first came out. Revamp was good too.
- Bigger than Us – Michael Rice (United Kingdom) – GOOD ENTRY!!! Wish them the best of luck
- Soldi – Mahmood (Italy) – GOOD RAP SONG. Really wish I could see the national selection performance.
- Love is Forever – Leonora (Denmark) – It’s decent. Did enjoy it. Reminds me of that YouTube background music. It’s cute. Maybe I could try to write a song like that using my ukulele.
And these are my top 10 songs for Eurovision 2019. Some of them were because of community influences and some because of my music taste. I am looking forward to waking up at 4am to see the contest live on SBS.
