Pokemon Ultra Moon has been released in Australia on November 17 2017 and as usual, I pre-ordered the game. But unlike before, this game disappointed me as it reuses similar plots from Pokemon Moon. You know that inside joke where Pokemon is pretty much the same thing over and over again? Well, Ultra Sun and Moon took that joke literally as the game is pretty much a carbon copy of the previous titles… but with some added gimmicks that don’t change much of the original game.
When I got Pokemon Black 2 in 2012, the game takes place a year or so later in the story timeline where you play as this new character and so forth. And playing Alpha Sapphire in 2014, it still provided a lot of changes such as gym format and the mapping in certain areas that make it slightly different from the original. These were the sequels and reboots that I was really excited for back in the time when it was out.
Pokemon Ultra Moon, however, doesn’t give off that ‘change’ that I was hoping for. I’ve spent the whole day going through the whole first Island Trial since I already knew what was going to happen!
Basically, how the games started is shockingly the same to the original:
- Lillie tries to escape the Aether Foundation (Again)
- Then 3 months pass and you meet your mom… in the same house in Pokemon Moon
- You pick your starter which isn’t as grand to how it used to be anymore
- You save Nebby on the bridge (again… in the same style as last time) and the island guardian rescues you… again…
Pretty much everything is similar to the old game that in my opinion, Ultra Moon is copy-paste game with a few small changes. I feel like I will just be replaying similar events to the game with a few alterations that wouldn’t be major to the story.
The small changes that were added to the game, they’re just small tweaks and gimmicks that make it slightly different trailer/preview wise… but not as much in the overall game.
I will try to continue the game when I can as I know there is more to what I’ve seen so far; but based of my own experience with the game, I don’t think it’s worth playing unless you haven’t played Sun and Moon yet.
